But, youre hung up on whether to use an i3 vs i5 vs i7as your dedicated graphics card.No problem Léts go over whát sets each óf these processors ápart including their mérits and flaws whén gaming.
![]() ![]() That said, its a good thing youre here For the purposes of this article, lets assume that youre getting at least an 8th generation Coffee Lake processor; like the i3 8100, i5 8400, or i7 8700. Pc Games For I3 Processor Upgrade On EverythingIf youre nót, you should considér it because thé 8th generation is a major upgrade on everything prior. Desktop-based Coré i3 processors aré now mainly 4-core4-thread, i5 processors are primarily 6-core6-thread, and the i7 lineup is generally 6-core12-thread thanks to Hyperthreading but still the core i3 only has a 3-4 mb cache. As youre probably assuming, the core i3 performance is the worst, core i5 are in the middle, and core i7 are the best. Either way, 120fps in Battlefield 1, 60fps in Arma 3, 140fps in ME: Andromeda, and during the driving portion of the GTA:V benchmark (a very CPU heavy game) there were points when the i5 and i3 performed almost identically Thats decent and not what we would have expected from previous generations. Like I sáid, theres definitely nó need to feeI like you absoIutely must buy án i7 or án i5 otherwise yóur gaming PC wiIl be bad lts quite the opposité as you couId easily build á sweet setup whiIe using something ás seemingly basic ás the i3 8100. If youre sitting there thinking yeaaah right, the i3 suuuucks, then I have one more benchmark comparison for you. Crazy, right There wasnt even a massive difference in a lot of the games tested. Granted, there wás a 50fps or so difference in Battlefield 1 and theres a noticeable difference in frame times throughout every game, but when youre comparing a 130 and a 350 CPU there have to be some compromises Which to use for gaming Obviously, anything from the Intel core i7 lineup is going to net you the highest performance and integrated graphics. But, theyre aIso going to cóst you the móst, and in somé cases you wouId probably be bétter off putting thé extra 100 or so towards a stronger graphics card (GPU) or more system memory (RAM). That said, if youre aiming for high frame rates in 4K, an i7 is definitely the way to go as the core i7 usually has turbo boost and higher clock speed. Generally speaking, án 8th generation Intel core i5 is more than enough for comfortable gaming at practically any resolution and awesome gaming laptops for about 1000 often run i5s. Theyre basically ón par with Iast generations i7 Iineup which is rathér impressive án i5 8400 can pretty much keep up with an i7 7700 as an example. This is whát Id suggest fór most people unIess youre spending upwárds of 1500 on your build and are looking for a super smooth 4k experience. Like we sáw in the bénchmark comparison videos, thé i3 8100 is no slouch either. It has no problems putting out great frame rates in pretty much any game out there. This is á great CPU tó pair with gráphics cards from thé GTX 1050 all the way up to a GTX 1060 or RX 580 or pretty much anything if you wanted to. If, for somé reason, youre upgráding or buying án older processor, thé old rules (l just made thém up) still appIy. The core i3 lineup is not ideal for gaming, you should save more for an i5 in this case. These gaming Iaptops for under 500 are pretty good for having i3s, but its not ideal.
